Durham Personal Trainer-Multi Adventure Coach, Glenn Hill explains why hill walking is great for your health including weight loss.

Mountain Climbing, Hill walking, Munro bagging and Trekking are all so great for health and easy to start doing "Really".

The 4 Reasons why you should be putting on your boots, packing up the car and hitting some hills are listed below.
In the past hill walking has always been my least favourite adventure activity.  These days I am doing less extreme sports and getting back into the idea of walking our beautiful hills and mountains.

Over the years I have had the opportunity to take walking groups up most of the United Kingdoms best hills, including the Mournes in Northern Ireland, Lakes, Peaks, Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia and smashed a large number of Scottish Munros. "some breath taking views".

"Why is walking so good for weight loss and health"

Calories expenditure:  Walking up the these big hills is demanding thats for sure, especially for less experienced walkers.  As an example climbing Ben Nevis could use 3000 calories, Snowdon & Scafell Pike 2000 Calories, however there are countless different routes up most hills and we all use calories up at different speeds.

Climbing these hills puts lots of strain on our joints, connective tissue & muscles and this is an absolutely great thing for health because,  we work better when every part of our body is used & tested.  You will have lots of aches and pains after a day of hill walking, these aches and pains are minor muscle tears and other micro damage.  Sometimes referred to as the afterburn or EPOC, this process uses lots more oxygen and calories to repair our bodies.  So those stiff couple of days after smashing a hill you are using loads more calories, which is amazing.

Positive Friendship Groups:  I was making an observation whilst at Ullswater in the Lakes and this is something I have always noticed in adventurous or mountainous areas. Hardly anybody is obese or even unhealthy looking - people generally look great... healthy, happy with a smile on their faces.  So spending time in these areas or more accurately a healthy habit of travel, walking and just exploring our wonderful island keeps you fit and healthy.

Ive spent my life of doing lots extreme sports and doing some scary brilliant stuff.  Lots of close calls & near misses and excitement with my adventure friends-friends for life .  They are friends that will drink beer, eat cake but also will push you to go the extra mile and bring positivity into your life.

If your friends would not dream of leaving their estate or area and would laugh at the thought of you walking up a big hill, or would not climb a hill with you: "are they the best friends for you"?

If you are stuck in a rut and want to get fit and healthy but all your friends only want to eat cake and drink booze, they will always always bring you down to their level.

If you want to grow but your friends wont allow your growth, simply move on from them people.  You can find walking, climbing adventure friends on forums and groups on social media, this will allow you to meet more motivated, energetic happy people.  Go online and join a walking club or group.
Mental health benefits: The experience and improvement in our mind happens almost immediately, just looking at a huge clean mountain lake with sun on your back, wind in your hair and fresh air in your lungs is a real health tonic.  All that fresh air is a detox for your lungs, sweating as your walking up the hill is a detox for your skin too.

Sometimes we get trapped in a negative mindset and we wrongly believe that there is no way out, on top of that hill surrounded by natural beauty it often puts into perspective our problems  and we then realise how insignificant our problems are really.

"Every day you should scare yourself" so this idea is all about personal growth.  (the performance curve is: (comfort-stretch-panic).  When your in your comfort zone, so day to day life is just stagnant for our personal development.  However when your in stretch, a little scared then you are developing, improving and growing as a person.  Lots of hills have technical, or exposed sections that scare people, once you have beaten your fears and climbed these sections you feel amazing and can feel mentally stronger and more confident.

Planning and looking forward to walking up a hill in the countryside gives us something nice to look forward to, which can be great in keeping us happy.  Personally if i have nothing planned for the upcoming months I can get very depressed very fast.  Adventures gives us great memories and pictures etc "when I look back at my life my best memories are never in a pub or in the house, they are all in or around beautiful countryside areas"

Vitamin D & Physiological benefits:  Being outside and getting some sunshine on your skin and even a little healthy tan is great for physical and mental health.  Vitamin D is a vitamin and a hormone which is linked to better sexual health, icreasing energy, gives us motivation and is linked to happiness.  Insufficient vit D=unhappiness and vice versa.

Increased vitamin D has always been my first point of call when training clients who where not happy or had a history of depression or mental health problems. "get outside and get happy".

Walking up a big hill or mountain really gets our circulating bodily fluid blood and lympathic fluid moving around our body.  This is great for our general health and well , static or slow moving body fluids is linked to poor health and disease.  Even the gaining of elevation and change in atmospheric pressure has a positive impact on increasing our blood movement, like shunting the blood, blood shunts can be great and used in fitness training.

Basically doing a little walking, mountaineering or any adventure outside activity is a brilliant way of becoming healthier, fitter, skinnier and happier.  The beautiful part is when you start walking up hills you want to walk up more and more, creating a healthy fitness habit.
