23andme lack of evidence

Personal trainer Glenn Hill talking about the hot topic of the new DNA Health Tests

Picture
“Know More About Yourself”  they say on the advert

There has been loads of talk about these new dna tests that are available in boots  that can warn you of ailments that you may have, food intolerances etc or your likely health events from looking at your DNA.

These tests are relatively new to UK but have been around in the States for ages with a couple of founder companies folding due to lack of evidence.

The facts

When the FDA (Food and Drug Administration)USA petitioned for proof and substantual evidence from 23andme and other genetic testers no actual evidentual proof was ever provided and this is why the FDA wants to know how predictive and accurate the risk estimates are. Its request were very reasonable, because the risk calculations of the company rely heavily on unproven assumptions.

These assumptions which the customer totally believes to be true and actionable....

In fact in November 2013 when 23andme were cited over the “publics health consequences of inaccurate results” of the home DNA test and forced the company to no longer marketing it as a diagnostic tool - something they have never really stopped doing.

So just like Lorisian/York intolerance blood testing in UK there isn’t enough independant proof just yet, so dont go running to your doctor straight away with your findings.  If enough evidence was out there it would have been provided when the Government agency requested it.

Data Protection?

Risk of losing your private information, lots of our US friends across the pond are worried about providing DNA samples that could possible  be used by anyone.

Dont get me wrong my DNA is already out there, pre Afghanistan Op Herrick Tours they take DNA swabs so they can find out what body part belongs to you when you are blown to pieces.  We where led to the belief  that our DNA could be used if needed by government agencies.....oh well its too late for me.

DNA capture agencies collect a lot of personal information, but they share it in broad situations, including with law enforcement (“Personal Information can be subject to disclosure pursuant to judicial or other government subpoenas, warrants, or orders, or in coordination with regulatory authorities.”)

Even if it isnt used by the government there is a future risk of it being used for targeted marketing, there is a familial link between the owners of Google and 23andme.  Paranoid? (one of the founders of 23andMe, Anne Wojcicki is married to Sergei Brin, the founder of Google.) In the early days Google billed itself as a custodian of the consumer, a company devoted to building the best tool in order for us satisfy our cravings for information on the web.  Google’s search engine did just that but now it also makes 10$ a quarter on selling your private information to other companies for targetted marketing.  So 23andMe could do the exact same thing when they have a huge database of DNA.

Having bought into the  blood intolerance testing by York labs just to do some research and find out that there is not enough independent testing i am waiting out on 23andme to see how reputable the company is, after all they are around to make cash.  Also waiting out to see how credible their findings are.  Lets wait to see the next bit of negative press over 23and me?

It seems the Company are writing their own rules, making some interesting medical finds but also marketting themselves as something they may not be.

Hopefully in the future this DNA testing can lead to cures of lots of disease until then i am still on the fence.

My Simple Fitness System

Personal Trainer and coach Glenn Talks about his system for success

Everyone needs a system and Personal training and changing someones life for the better and for good is no exception.  Because if you are not assessing you are guessing and because everyone is different my constantly progressing system is called the 3M’s system.

MOVEMENT -  MIND - MOBILITY

The system which has changed over the years is now as slick and effective as it needs to be for the time being.  The courses which have led me to finalise this system are as follows, bearing in mind that I was already a time served fitness instructor (20 years).

  • Sports Massage diploma
  • Nutrion for weight loss - Premier Fitness
  • BodyMap Practitioner
  • Master Personal Trainer EIF
  • Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner
  • Aplied Movement Neurology Course
  • Crossfit, Metafit, Metafit Strong
  • Fitness Business Master class Course

Movement  My training is based around conjugate training, basically always varying big body exercises with or without weights at a very high intensity.  Based on coupling with powerlifting or strength training, Army fitness and Crossfit style exercises.  I don’t follow one nutrition plan i use the best for the client at the time utilising movement of amounts and types of foods including “fasting, cycling, macro nutrients, paleo, clean”

Mind  using NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) making real changes at a sub concious level by making your sub conscious believe in your self.   Your self limiting beliefs, negative habits and bad foods can all be removed for good.  “this is powerful stuff”.  I dont believe that you can change a clients habits without looking at their history and reasons for the initial issue.  This ensures that a client has to take full responsibility before moving forward.   An NLP program can change a limiting belief for good within 5 minutes!!!

Mobility
using BodyMap I ensure my clients bodies are working to their full potential.  BodyMap uses the brain (nervous system) to improve flexibility, improve function and remove even cronic pain in minutes.  “breathing-eyes-balance-spatial awareness-proprioception and joint decompression”.  I also find and fix mobility and power issues quickly using Applied Movement Neurology  to ensure strength, muscle and fitness gains can occur as quick as is possible.  Using these skills I often improve power, function and remove pain within 5 minutes!!!

“THIS IS WHY I HAVE A SYSTEM”
  • You will enjoy and look forward to coming to the exercise sessions because we have changed your mindset.
  • Foods that are a problem now, wont be in the future.
  • Your body will function better so the exercise will become easier.
  • “You will believe you can get results-so you will get results.
  • You will be the best version of yourself.

Well I hope you like my system , my system isn’t a secret and  can be copied, however it does take a large amount and time and money to build this system.  If you are interested and think i can help please either text or leave your details in the contact box below.

3 exercise tricks you wont know

7/22/2015

Personal Trainer Durham - Chester le Street | 07983570574

Tribe todays blog is giving away some of my magic, so please read this blog carefully and practice these amazing techniques.  I love blowing clients away with hacks, tricks and methods of increasing function, removing pain, increasing power and flexibility within 5 minutes.

“Other exercise professionals - feel free to borrow these tricks”

You see i have undertaken a number of very clever courses all of which prove that the mind/nervous system is running the body and can give and take away all of your function.  If your balance (vestibular system) eyes, proprioception and breathing aren’t 100% your body wont be either.

Pain and function (TIP NUMBER 1)

Your breathing is the most important thing going on in relation to your nervous system, and functions.  We mostly breath through our chest (maybe it’s vanity by holding our bellies in) but by doing this your brain feels a little threatened (NOT SAFE) as you are just using part of your lungs.  If you are experiencing pain and it’s not from a trauma or you cant explain it, if you are stressed or cant sleep or if your blood pressure is high and you would like to reduce  it try this drill:
  • Belly or diaphragmatic breathing: because you will be using parts of your lungs you may not have used in years you may feel a bit dizzy afterward for a few seconds.
  • You could test your pain level or flexibility (toe touch) before and after this exercise:
  1.  Simply put your hand on your belly and push it out once or twice to experience having a fatter belly.
  2. Now take a big deep breath in from the mouth at the same time as pushing your belly out and do this a number of times until it becomes natural.  Keeping your hand on your belly help the breathing along by pushing your belly back in when your breath out.
  3. Now after every breath move your hand lower until your hand is right at the bottom of your tummy(try and feel for the air touching your hand as it moves lower and lower).
  4. Finally  try and count four seconds as you breath in, hold for 4 seconds, four seconds on the exhale and four seconds holding.

Power and flexibility

There is loads going on with your body and brain at anyone time and this could explain how on some days you are weak as a kitten and somedays as strong as bull.  We forget through lack of use how our body moves, where our body is and because of this our body doesnt feel SAFE and takes back power and function.  Also the balance relationship from eyes, ears and body becomes less effective and removes function too.

Please try both of these super simple methods below to improve your flexibility/function and power they really work.  firstly test something like a flexibility test sitting trying to touch your toes or standing hands together seeing how far you can twist around(demo in video).

Saccade Stack (TIP NO 2): medically used for testing function of the vestibular (balance) system but can be used excellently for correcting the system too which in turn will improve flexibility, power and function.

  1. Put your fingers up in front of your face about 10-12 inches apart.
  2. Focuss on each finger as fast as you can whilst keeping your head stable.
  3. Focuss on each finger about 10-15 times and then retest your flexibility or function.
Picture
  1. Now try the vertical saccade stack, its the same drill only the fingers are above and below your eyeline at a 12in distance.
  2. Retest all of your flexibility and function......improved????
Propriostimulation (TIP 3): We are trying to remind our brain exactly where we are in time and space and the quickest way to do this is to rub ourselves all over very vigorously.

  1. Dont forget to test something, function flexibility or even power. Spinal flexibility works really well.
  2. Rub your hands very vigorously over every joint and muscle as if you where very very itchy not forgetting the lower back.
  3. Retest your function.  (to improve the results get a friend to rub and gently thump all along your spine)
Hopefully by now you will have greatly improved function, flexibility, power and reduced or removed pain?  If nothing happened then either (a) there is something going on hormonally with you. (b) vestibular system has an issue. (c) history or injury or the brain doesn’t feel safe. (d) You have done the drills wrong.

Most of you should have had results:

Please let me know your stories or how you have got on with these drills, I use them daily and see huge improvements on a daily basis with clients young and old.

I have loads more of these hacks and tricks, if you would like to know more please get in touch..

Regards

4 reasons you fail at weight loss

7/21/2015

PT|Chester le Street|Bannatynes                                               07983570574

Heya tribe todays blog is more about how certain habits or things people say are a sure fire way of knowing they will FAIL at weight loss.  This is something i have picked up from experiencing trends in potential new PT clients and those that start and give up immediately.

If you are on this list, dont worry there are exceptions “NOT LOADS THOUGH”.

  1. PROCRASTINATION:   If i had a pound for every potential client, friend or gym member that has said “ i dont really have the time now, i will be able to fully commit or start this training when___insert excuse_______.    I am off on the school holidays, when my work routine changes, when my partner is back from being away,  after my holidays.                       Speaking from experience its all CRAP, start today or the next couple of days or it just WONT happen for you.  You see there will always be another excuse, think of it this way: the procrastination is the main reason that you are overweight as you procrastinated over buying the pedal bike, getting the weights, buying healthy food, going for a walk or run, sorting your life out.
Nike had it right all those years ago:    “JUST DO IT”
If Macdonalds did motivational quotes:   “JUST THINK ABOUT DOING IT”

       2.    NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY:  This could be the number one reason for always
failing at an exercise or healthy eating plan.  I am not the only personal trainer that listens
keenly during an initial assessment for someone to take full responsibility for their own
issues.  If i hear "its because of the kids, working hours, husband or wife buys the wrong
food, been lots going on or dont have the time” i soon realise that training them will be
just like flogging a dead horse.

If you blame others for your issues, when your training or eating healthy becomes a
pain (and it will) you can just give up because you can conveniently pass the buck/blame.
I have trained some very very busy people with loads going on with family and work, they
litterally had a spaire 30 minutes each day and they still got fit and healthy because they
prioritised and took full responsibility for themselves.

I ONLY TAKE CLIENTS THAT TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY.

      3.   FULLY COMMITING :  Tracking down a PT on Facebook when you are
drunk and feeling sorry for yourself and booking a PT consultation isnt the best way.
If you are really serious about changing the way you feel and look you would should
search and find the phone number for the Personal Trainer/Gym and book in properly.
If you provide all of your contact details including phone and email then you are much
more commited than just sending a Facebook Message.

Changing your life is a big deal with lots to consider so sending a FB message probably
isn’t the best idea.  Hopefully you wouldn’t just text when you unable to work because
of sickness (unless you are very unprofessional) so actually speaking to a person to help
with your health is the best way.

If you dont provide means of contact, phone and email then you must not want to be
contactable when you dont show up.

Training with a Personal Trainer and then eating and doing what you want in your spare
time isn’t fully committing to yourself the PT or the plan.  Also saying that you are too
unwell to leave the house or attend fitness and then checking in at a Pub Restaurant isnt
            being fully committed either.

     4.   LAZYNESS: Being Lazy is a misconception about people that are overweight, however
some people are lazy or more concisely are not willing to work hard enough to change
their mind or body.  An example of this is when arranging to consult about Personal
Training and only meeting at your house or a location 1 minute from your work.  For most
people this doesn’t necessarily mean they are lazy, that being said i have had a few no-
shows and tyre kickers by now that expect everything to be done at their home or nearby.

During the workouts only putting in half your effort will only provide half the results, this I
have seen countless times.  Now I understand that it takes practice, determination, better
Neural signaling, balance and countless other things to be able to really push yourselves
hard and safely.  Still some individuals just think attendance will provide results WRONG.

  • Some people that have failed in exercise and nutrition may have notice one or more of the above habits in themselves, dont worry though because even if you have failed a number of times you can still succeed at whatever you conceive and believe.
  • If you dont believe yet, find someone who can help you believe...even a friend.
  1. Lets start by not PROCRASTINATING find who or what you need and start something NOW.
  2. Take FULL RESPONSIBILITY for the way you look and blame yourself or you wont move forward.
  3. What ever you decide to do in your life FULLY COMMIT and dont be half hearted or you wont achieve your dreams.
  4. Please dont be a LAZY bugger, people that are lazy are less successful, less happy and don’t have the quality of life of energetic go getters.  Follow the great advice from Nike and “just do it”.

There is no need  to fail and there is always someone there to help, friends, family or a professional.
