Personal Trainer For Humans & Dogs “Glenn Hill”

There is a growing health epidemic in the UK and this time it’s our pets, it makes sense that as the human obesity epidemic deepens so does that of our furry loved ones.  In 2014 a PDSA study claimed that in 5 years fat animals will outstrip healthy ones.  It seems like it is happening even faster than that with canine obesity rocketing in the UK.

This is why I have spent some time learning about canine issues and have become the first Canine personal Trainer in the area, perhaps the whole of the UK.  Its a similar struggle so I adopt the same strategies for weight loss.

According to the 2016 report by the British Vetinary Association, 60% of vets said that obesity is the biggest concern for dogs and pets in the UK.  Being over weight or obese  isn’t a healthy position for an animal just like it isnt for a human being.

Please realise that your pooch being heavily overweight leads to the same issues as an overweight human, such as heart disease, breathing difficulties, diabetes and arthritis. The crazy thing is because we feed our dogs we are causing them suffering and early mortality in the name of love....unbeleivable really isnt it?

Providing our dogs bigger portions, too many treats, human food as a special treat, take aways, fry ups and alcohol are slowly killing our pets .”yet - we have all done it”.  Also our busy lives can sometimes lead to only giving our dogs 5 or 10 minutes execise each day.... just imagine how fat and ill you would feel if you only stretched your legs for 5 minutes each day?

So there is a real and present danger for your best friend, and something needs to be done.

Ideally this is your job to prioritise better, more time to exercise your dog, calorie controlled healthy food and making a plan.  If you are in overwhelm or dont know where to start...I can help

Bespoke Dog Personal Training in the North East of UK
  • Balanced diet for your dog to ensure a calorie deficit to ensure weight loss
  • Progressive exercise in the countryside (natural habitat) starting slow and moving onto hills and sprints all on a lead (luckily i can run fast)

Do we need carbohydrates

Personal Trainer Glenn Hill talking about Carbs and the fact we dont need them! (2-60)
Picture
This is a contentious one, and to be healthy its probably a good idea to have some carbohydrates(fibrous vegetables).  But as the micronutrient (vits & minerals) density in carbs are so poor these days I would probably say its just about getting a little fibre.

There are increasing number of gym users using a high fat, medium protein and low carb diet (keto) and for a lot of them it works really well.  They keep increasing muscle without putting on too much fat.

I hear this pretty often “but I need carbs for energy”

In our evolution as a hunter gatherer we would have surived on around 80g of carbs a day and been able to walk miles hunting for food, run and escape wolves and carry water back to our homes, all this on very low carbs.  I can just imagine now all the veggies saying “oh no thats not true we ate nuts, seeds and plants”, bull shit as our hormones including testosterone wouldnt have developed, we wouldnt have been strong and evolved.  If our ancestors survived purely on berries and nuts we wouldnt be here now.....sorry but true.

Its all in the word essential:
  1. We need essential fatty acids to survive:  EFAs such as omega 3 & 6
  2. We need essential proteins to survive, there are 9 and of that there are 3 BCAAs branch chain amino acids... isoleucine, valine and leucine which is our trigger
  3. There are no essential carbohydrates (zero)
Its widely recognised that our minimum limit of carbs to survive is zero.

Now that being said our brain uses a type of carb/sugar as fuel called glucose, for all you oldies the original lucozade which was a medicine made by a pharmaceutical company is high in glucose. We dont need it because our body naturally breaks down fat to make its own glucose....its amazing.

A friend of mine “no names” worked for that pharmaceutical comapany and he suggested that lucozade was initially designed to create more diabetics which in turn would make more money for the pharma companies.  Wether it was intentional or not the outcome is the same.

So what on earth are carbs, energy provided by plants and typically stored in the liver and muscles as glycogen.
  • monosaccharides-simple sugars (avoid)
  • disaccharides-fructose+sucrose (fruit)
  • polysaccharides-complex
Sugary carbs, cakes, fruit fizzy drinks, alcohol etc are extremely bad for us and I beleive the biggest problem regarding in health in western countries because:
  1. Sugar has been proven to adversely effect the immune system (just two innocent smoothies) can wreck the immune system for hours.  So sugar stops our ability to fight disease.
  2. Because sugar stops us fighting disease, research has proven that sugar actually fuels cancer growth & when fats replace sugar the growths reduce.  Study provided by Dr Thomas Seyfeid.  Intertestingly one of my clients and good friends Charles has been dealing with bowel cancer & we reduced sugars drastically.
  3. We have known for years now that sugary diets cause type 2 diabetes and when a diabetic stops sugar and eats healthy or tries a keto diet the symptoms cab be reversed.
  4. Sugar is at the top of the glycaemic index(which just means its utilized as energy super fast) and is the worse kind of energy that provides an energy spike and then a dip which can lead to snacking and poor food choices.
We could say our body is designed to eat more fats and proteins, even our energy storage gives us a clue into this...
  • Around 84% of our stored energy comes from fat.
  • Around 14-15% of our stored energy comes from protein.
  • Only 1% of our stored energy comes form carbs (stored in liver and muscles).

Now for an athlete or people that train hard for an event or optimum results, then it’s a total story.  their nutrition macros (amounts) and  timing are way different than most of us.

What I would recomend for my clients is more good fats(essential) & proteins(essential) and less carbs(non essential), firstly it works great for weight loss. “to lose fat - eat fat”.
And from those carbs I would avoid sugar for all of the reasons above and chose my carbs from dark fibrous vegetables and the odd fruit. I also get my micronutrients by supplementing with vits, minerals and a superfood shot.

But be realistic

I drink every weekend and have the odd curry etc also, I am still very fit for a 42 year old and have a perma six pack.  If it works for me it can work for you.

I hope you enjoyed my blog on carbs...

PT Glenn Hill | 60 day Health Blog Challenge (1-60)

Recently I have found myself getting involved in the social media melstrom that is the current election & terror attacks and it makes me unhappy to my stomach.

It doesnt need to be this way, It’s my own fault as I am giving my energy to it for no reason.  Likewise i get myself involved in wasting my energy in advertising my services all of the time (selling stuff) or promting my services (selling stuff) or promoting health products that I use (selling stuff).

That title is a little harsh, dont worry please read on as this blog might just be the catalyst for you to accept responsibility and stop blaming your circumstances for your health.  If you blame other things on an inability to eat well, to train or to get fit its a classic example of not taking responsibility for your problems.
This is probably the number 1 reason why people fail at weight loss!

Mindset for Weight Loss is Rubbish

mindset for fat loss/ Personal Trainer Gateshead

Mindset for weight loss is rubbish  “said no one ever”
MINDSET ISNT RUBBISH!!!!!!

The importance of mindset or your head being in the right place for weight loss or improved fitness...HUGE!!

Myself and my partner Viki have just came back of holiday and now resemble Wayne & Waynette slob.  We did train three times during our 7 day break, which wasnt ideal and not enough, but we ate & drank our body weight in alcohol and food (amazing fillet steaks &  chatuebriande) to mention a few.  This is where mindset comes in, because we dont feel bad we had an amazing time, but now we will start the hard but enjoyable fitness & nutrition work again.

Some peoples negative habits ruin health such as.... having a food slip up, beating themselves up badly and getting into a cycle of binge comfort eating and no exercise.  A better habit would be to forgive themselves & immediately laugh it off and then work even harder.  If you follow the second habit YOU WILL ACHIEVE good health & if you follow the first habit YOU WILL HAVE POOR HEALTH & SHORTENED LIFE.

Its crazy because using mindset work is simple to do which helps with healthy habits & strategies, but most (nearly all) personal Trainers don’t know the first thing about it.

We all say nutrition first (80%)
Secondly exercise (20%)

Good nutrition for most of my clients is 100% impossible unless we change their mindset. So forget about how good the nutrition plan or routine is if the client is in the wrong place in their head...

Clients will often:

1. Secretly eating without their family knowing
2. Blame their personal life situation for comfort eating
3. Things in their past effecting how they eat
4. Social events and alcohol ruining the habit and leading to eating crap/ket/junk
5. Treating themselves after a workout
6. Unable to stop a bad eating habit
7. Stuck in a poor strategy leading to eating the wrong stuff
8. Addiction to sugar, fizzy drinks etc
9. Feeling inadequate or bullied at work leading to comfort eating
10. Constantly in adrenal stress leading to eating and drinking the wrong stuff
11. Wrongly believing alcohol, a glass of wine is a de-stress after a long hard day(not)
12. Peer group pressure leading to eating the wrong stuff
13. Being in the wrong social circle, if you hang with weight loss failures you will be sabotaged by them(definately)

I wouldn't say I am an expert in anything, however I know a load more about mindset than most of the modern PTs, I personally think most disregard mindset as something that's not very important, and having motivation quotes is all very well " sweat is just fat crying" etc. These quotes work amazingly well for motivated people and do the exact opposite for individuals that have difficulty with motivation.

Some things that can work like dynamite for a client that lacks self belief, stuck in a negative place, poor habits, problem foods etc...
All personal Trainers can learn this stuff as it's not secret.

A) removing problem food/drinks : in our minds eye things we hate and love are in different places, and have different sub-modalities. By swapping them over you can help a client remove a problem food by making them hate it!!!! Boom

B) self belief, without it a client will never achieve full potential. We can change a belief system and improve self belief in minutes and long term.

C) difficult situations, If a client fails at a certain situation each week. For example goes for the cookie jar at the same time each Saturday night, they will only be using a fraction of their assets and resources. By reminding them of all of their internal assets the problem behaviour can be removed.

D) if like me just a bit of a cloud and I am miserable all day! we can understand this, advice on using UVB sunbed, or normal sunbed use, take our clients outside often especially when the sun provides the most vitamin D. Take in nature and ground or earth our selves on the grass. A bit hippy I know, but this works for a lot of people.

E) it's often our subconscious and really bad lifestyle strategies that ruin our health using trance work including the Milton model, we can talk to a clients subconscious and at least understand and realise about our bad strategies. Which helps change them.

F) push and pull motivation, most people have a great push motivation: E.G. , lose this massive spare tyre around my waist. This isn't often the best type of motivator.

Look at athletes and mr Olympias they have immense pull motivators ... a future image of themselves winning gold or winning mr Olympia playing over and over again in their heads. Your brain can't distinguish between imagination and real, so if you picture it enough your brain thinks it has happened and will give you all the motivation and everything else you need to achieve your goal. So everyone should spend time working on their future selves "so important"

G) Diary work, using positive words displayed each day on your diary.. they will influence how you feel. Each day write down something positive you have done, this will allow your brain to become less negative. At the end of each week review how positive your week has been. (There is no unlucky or lucky it's just how we perceive stuff- we can change this)
A positive personal diary statement or affirmation said daily whilst tapping the thymus gives us deep down confidence and improves our mindstate massively. Just try it.

H) choosing how you want to feel whenever you want, anchoring. This is used widely even in politics, if you would like to feel energetic, relaxed, motivated, enthusiastic, calm or confident using your memory and mental imagery we can elicit any mood to suit your situation. This can be used for example rubbing our body before training (proprio-stim) can bring back feelings of energy and motivation, wouldn't that be handy for your training session?

I) re-pattern exercise, if something is messing up your nutrition or exercise we can link an mental image of future failure and more importantly replace with an image of future health. What this will do is, the next time you try and do your negative strategy your brain will automatically think of the future implications which helps direct you to better decisions.

Mindset is massive and also being coached and not being instructed....

I have met some good instructors along the way, some of them think they are amazing coaches! On one particular S&C course these personal trainers where just over coaching, they never shut up... this is annoying and can put you off. In fact on lady who was getting all this feedback complained, and later having a coffee they all ridiculed her behind her back including the course instructor.

"Unprofessional instructor behaviour"

Her technique got worse by the autocratic style they used... so they where ineffective coaches and actually just became instructors.

A coach ... he or she coaches the person and not the activity. They will improve the clients technique but will be mindful of their learning preference, mood, energy, time of month, emotions and history... and everything else.
I wrongly mentioned a political statement to a client and she went physically weak and tired(bad coach!)

A coach... has big eyes and ears and a small mouth. This means they pay great attention to technique, detail and personal feedback and provide as little feedback to achieve maximum results. If they never shut up... they are instructors.

Some holiday Snaps...
